Koay Kak

What is Koay Kak

Koay Kak

Koay Kak, often written as Char Koay Kak, is a popular Penang hawker food. It is rice cakes fried in thick black soy sauce, with eggs, bean sprouts and chye por (preserved vegetable bits). The bean sprouts and chye por adds crunchiness to the rice cakes. Chilli paste gives it spiciness. Some times seafood such as prawns and squid rings are added.

Koay Kak looks like Char Koay Teow with some noted differences. Koo Chye (chives) are rarely sprinkled over Koay Kak, unlike Char Koay Teow. The inclusion of prawns to Koay Kak is also not as common as with Char Koay Teow.

Ingredients of Koay Kak:

  • rice cakes
  • eggs
  • bean sprouts
  • chye por (preserved vegetable bits)
  • prawns (optional)
  • squid (optional)
  • chilli paste, as desired
