Chee Cheong Fun (also written Chee Cheong Fan), is a dish of steamed flat rice noodle rolls, is a popular Penang hawker food. This is a Cantonese dish that originated from Southern China and Hong Kong - the chee-cheong-fun Chee Cheong Fun comes from Cantonese, and its literal meaning is "pig intestine noodle" - not the most appetizing of chee-cheong-funs, but it is derived from the appearance of the rolls of flat rice noodles.
Penang has come up with its own version of serving Chee Cheong Fun. Unlike the Hong Kong style, which are often freshly made and stuffed with prawns, the Penang hawker version of Chee Cheong Fun is devoid of any meat. The steamed rice noodles are served with thnee cheo (a sweet dark-red sauce), hae ko (black, prawn paste sauce), huan cheo chiau (chili sauce), oil, and sprinkled with sesame seeds.
