Arriving by bus in Penang, most visitors will use the Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal. This terminus is for long-distance buses from throughout Malaysia. Alternatively you can also take a bus to the terminus in Butterworth, just a short distance from the ferry terminal.

Arriving by bus at Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal

People arriving by bus on Penang Island terminates their journey at the Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal, which is located about mid-way between the northern and southern end of Penang Island. Public buses are available, the yellow-colored Milan buses and the newer, air-conditioned blue-cream-red RapidPenang buses. Directly outside the bus terminal, at the bus stop along Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, you can catch RapidPenang U401 or Milan No. 3-4. The fare is about RM1.50.

Another alternative is to cross Jalan Sungai Dua beside the bus terminal, to reach the bus stop at the opposite side of the road. From there, you can get RapidPenang buses U301 and U303 to town. The fare is about RM1.50.

Arriving by bus at the Butterworth Ferry Terminal

People arriving by bus on Penang mainland side terminates their journey at the Butterworth Ferry Terminal (Pengkalan Sultan Abdul Halim), take a ferry across to George Town. The fare is RM1.20 for adults one way (service from George Town to Butterworth is not charged). This takes you to Weld Quay in George Town, from where you can get connections to other parts of the island (see the "Getting Around in Penang" section).

  Where to eat

If you arrive at the Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal, you can walk across Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah under the elevated highway to a Chinese coffee shop on the other side of the road where there is a variety of hawker food to choose from. If you arrive at the Butterworth Ferry Bus Terminal, you can see the hawker centre right next to the terminal where there is plenty of hawker food to try. They are not the best food in Penang, granted, but something to fill you up on your journey.

  Any public buses?

Yes, you can easily get public buses from the two bus stops located on the front and side entrances of the Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal. The one in front is at Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah while the one at the side is at Jalan Sungai Dua (cross Jalan Sungai Dua to the bus stop on the opposite site to get the bus to town). There are Rapid Penang and Milan buses stopping there, where you can ride to town.

Other arrival options

If you are arriving by other means, please select arrival by plane, by car, or by train.
